Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
The primary goal for the design of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was to create a space that encouraged confrontation and captured the hot sultry environment that Williams wrote into the script. Director Jay Fields wanted a “transparent” room that would suggest that privacy was not possible. He also wanted to capture the essence of “southern aristocracy” . Elaborate posts with period arches and decor formed the vision for the walls that did not exist. Several hundred feet of erosion netting interspersed with shredded muslin hung upstage of the acting area. Combinations of green and magenta light beaming through the netting and muslin gave a constant feeling of humidity and heat. The angle of the platform and the placement of the furniture provided the “confrontational” elements that were desired.
